Discovering Blue Apron

I tend to be a creature of habit, especially when it comes to myself. Being single, it’s so easy to order take out, go to a restaurant, cook up some eggs, instead of being creative in the kitchen for one.

Usually my kitchen creations are inspired by the “family” dinners I host for close friends. So, I forced myself to step outside of my box and order a box from Blue Apron! I ordered the two person plan, which is 3 meals for the week for $59.94 and used a coupon code for $30 off, totaling $29.94, no shipping fee. They advertise it to be $9.99 a serving, which to me is kind of high – especially if I have to cook everything – but with the discount, it put that at $4.99 a serving, so I had to try it out.

My refrigerated box arrived today! I forgot to take a picture of the inside but it was lined with a metallic insulated bag with two ice blocks sealed in thick plastic bags, which I saved in the freezer for future use. (Mama taught me to be somewhat frugal…We will see how long they last)

Each meal comes with a recipe page and the ingredients are clearly packaged and labeled to easily identify. You still have to have basic cooking ingredients: salt, pepper, olive & cooking oils, etc.

Today’s recipe: Curried Catfish & Coconut Rice

You still have to have some basic cooking skills to know how to chop, mince and dice. Historically, even though I am both Puerto Rican and Cuban, cooking rice has never been an easy task, so I was a little worried about this one. But the step by step instructions and pictures came handy. The steps are specific and set to maximize your cooking time. The Prep Time and Cooking Time was pretty much on the spot!

In the end, I was quite proud of myself. The meal looked just as the picture and it tasted GREAT! My rice came out perfectly! I was excited to cook with ingredients that I had never used before – ginger, a chutney spice blend, catfish… I’m glad I tried something new!

Overall, I’m excited to try the other two recipes, and experience some new foods. I can always reuse the recipes at a future date. I’m honestly not sure if I would continue this on the regular at full price. The site does offer the convenience of postponing your orders, so you can chose to have a box delivered once a month, etc. It may be a good outlet to try something new and spice it up in the kitchen!
